Step-by-step setup
Check what your region's store actually stocks
LG Content Store, then Apps, then search. The catalogue differs by country and webOS version, so the useful question is not which player is best but which exists for you. IPTV Smarters Player is the most widely stocked. Older webOS searches slowly enough that people give up a second too early.
Recognise the impostors
Listings called TiviMato, Tivimax and similar appear on LG stores regularly. They are unrelated products trading on the resemblance and some charge money. TiViMate has never had a webOS build and none is coming — if that player matters to somebody, this television needs a stick attached rather than a store search.
Fetch your phone before typing anything
The Magic Remote's pointer makes character entry slow and mistakes invisible, and a mistyped server address produces a message that helps nobody. Open the activation thread on a phone and hold it while you work through the fields. Two minutes of preparation removes the commonest failure here.
Enter the account
Smarters wants Login with Xtream Codes API and the three values. Smart IPTV has no login screen and shows a MAC address instead, which you pair with your M3U at siptv.app/mylist from the phone you are holding. Knowing which app you installed saves a genuinely baffling quarter of an hour.
Set the decoder now, pre-emptively
**This is the step that prevents the dominant LG support case.** Before you even notice a problem, set the player to native or hardware decoding. A black picture with working audio is a decoder mismatch and it is by a wide margin the most reported symptom on webOS. Two taps now; an evening later.
Restart and learn the coloured buttons
The line-up and guide appear on the second opening. The coloured keys drive favourites and the EPG and are what make these televisions pleasant rather than merely workable. Five minutes learning which is which repays itself nightly.
Try the lower-bitrate copy before writing
If a single channel misbehaves after the decoder is set correctly, look for its HD or SD twin in the list and try that. Most busy channels carry one. This resolves a good share of single-channel complaints on webOS without anybody contacting anybody, and it is the first thing we would suggest anyway.
Trim, and pick a quality
Hide what nobody here watches, build a favourites group of thirty or forty, and decide whether this set takes 4K or HD. An LG remote was not designed to scroll thousands of entries and will not start now.
Common errors and fixes
Black screen, audio continues
Whose: the decoder, not the channel and not your account. Native or hardware decoding in the app settings. Where one channel does it and the rest behave, switch that channel to its lower-bitrate twin rather than changing the global setting.
It opens then closes immediately
Whose: the television. Almost always a webOS build too old for the current app. Check for a firmware update first. If the set is current and it still will not stay open, install one of the alternatives rather than fighting this one.
The pointer makes it unusable
Whose: the remote. Press the wheel on the Magic Remote to switch between pointer and directional modes. These players are built around a directional pad and behave oddly under a floating cursor, which reads convincingly as broken software.
It stopped after the television updated
Whose: LG. Firmware updates can clear app data. Smarters needs three values again; Smart IPTV needs its playlist re-sent to the same MAC. Neither affects your subscription, and both take under two minutes if the credentials are somewhere findable.
Channels load but the guide is empty
Whose: usually the app's refresh rather than missing data. Force an update from the player settings and give it several minutes. Where particular minor channels carry no listings at all, that is normal and no provider has them — the major networks are the ones worth judging it by.
