Step-by-step setup
Check the Google account before searching
The store lets you browse signed out and then fails at the moment of installing, explaining nothing about why. Thirty seconds of checking saves that. On Google TV the store sits under Apps rather than on the front row.
Install a player

Check what the box actually contains
Before concluding anything about streaming quality on an unbranded device, look at its real specification rather than the listing. Settings, About, and check the memory. Under 2 GB and the experience will be poor whatever we do at our end — we would rather tell you that on day one than move you between servers for a fortnight while the box stays the problem.
Trim the categories

Common errors and fixes
The app is not in the store on this box
Whose: the box. Some cheaper units run the phone build of Android, which hides television-only listings entirely. Sideload the APK with Downloader exactly as the Firestick page describes — it behaves identically, you simply lose automatic updates.
Everything stutters regardless of setting
Whose: the hardware, and we will say so rather than move you between servers. Budget Android boxes are frequently advertised with specifications that are not true. Check hardware decoding first, then check what the device actually contains. Below 2 GB of memory there is no setting that rescues it.
No programme data at all
Whose: neither, usually. Let the first retrieval finish, then run Update EPG from settings. Where it is genuinely missing on particular channels, that is normal — minor international feeds often carry none, and no provider has it.
A stream was refused mid-evening
Whose: your plan, doing what it says. Every player reports this unhelpfully. Count what is genuinely playing across the house, phones included, before writing — a backgrounded app can hold a stream open long after somebody stopped watching.
The remote lags in the guide
Whose: the box, almost always. Drawing a programme grid across thousands of channels is the job that exposes a weak processor, and it is unrelated to the stream. Hide the categories nobody opens — that alone transforms it on modest hardware. If it is still sluggish on a current box, check hardware decoding is on.

What should I actually buy?
Chromecast with Google TV 4K for most people. An Nvidia Shield if this is a heavily used main television and you want it fast for years, accepting it costs more than a year of subscription. For an unbranded box, insist on 2 GB of memory and an ethernet socket, and treat the listing as advertising.
Why does this platform produce fewer problems?
Because nothing is sideloaded, the store handles updates, and the hardware is generally competent. The exceptions are the very cheap boxes, which are the source of nearly every Android complaint that reaches us. If you are buying rather than using something you own, that is the thing to avoid.
Can different screens run different players?
Completely normally, and most households end up that way. The account does not know or care which application is connecting. There is no cost and no configuration to mixing them.
Will TiViMate recordings fill the box?
Yes, if you point them at internal storage on a cheap device. Use a USB drive or network storage, set before anybody starts recording rather than after the box fills. This is the one Android problem that is genuinely self-inflicted and genuinely annoying to unwind.
Why do you ask what box I have?
Because it changes the answer completely. The same symptom on a Shield and on a forty-dollar Android box points at different causes, and the second is far more often the hardware. Telling us the model in your first message usually removes an exchange.
Does the Play Store version update itself?
Yes, in the background, which is one of the quiet advantages of this platform over a sideloaded Firestick. An app that stops working after an update is rare here; on a Firestick an old APK on new Fire OS is a regular cause.
Should I buy the Shield or the Chromecast?
Chromecast with Google TV 4K for most people: cheap, competent, and it will not be the bottleneck. The Shield if this is a main television you want to feel fast for five years and you are content spending more than a year of subscription on it. Both handle everything here comfortably.
