Plenty of services attach a 4K label to whatever they were already sending. The distinction that matters is whether the broadcaster produced the event in Ultra HD to begin with — upscaling adds pixels and no information whatsoever. That twin deserves more attention than the 4K feed does, because it is what the support desk reaches for most often. When somebody writes to say the picture is breaking up, the first questions are which feed they are on and what else is playing in the house — and the fix, four times out of five, is dropping a screen that never needed Ultra HD down to the HD copy. Ultra HD earns its bandwidth on a large panel showing sport or film. On a phone, a tablet or the set in the spare room it does not — HD is indistinguishable at that size on a quarter of the data. On any screen where nobody can see the difference, which is most of them. A phone, a tablet or a spare-room television shows HD and 4K identically while the 4K feed costs three to four times the bandwidth — bandwidth the main television needed. Choosing HD deliberately on secondary screens is the single most useful setting in this subscription.
